What is Medical ASMR?
Medical ASMR covers many different types of Doctor and Patient close personal interaction such as cranial nerve examinations and roleplay.
This ensures that viewers of videos experience ASMR triggers and tingles.
The reason that Medical video’s are effective for ASMR is that it is a very one on one personal attention situation.
And there is a lot of physical contact between the Doctor and patient.
Medical ASMR Triggers
There are so may good good triggers from palpation, massage, manipulation, percussion, brushing and tapping.
And also soft spoken sounds, caressing, hands on, use of tools. All conducted at a relaxed and steady pace in a safe environment.

Patient Examinations
Patient Examinations are super popular ASMR Videos. The one on one Doctor and Patient relationship and interaction create the perfect environment for ASMR triggers.
Typically these will start with introductions, washing of hands. And then move on to discussing what the issue is. These examinations fall into two types.
Either a more general check up on the individual. Or Head to Toe. Or a more specific injury or condition led consultation.
The repetitive nature of some of the questions and movements are a key feature of the medical videos.
One of the most popular video series is those featuring Dr Hollie Berry. In a series of examinations she checks patients for various ailments including Lymph Glands, Cardiac, Respiratory and Cranial Nerve.

Unintentional Medical ASMR
There are so many unintentional medical ASMR videos. And often these are from student nurses practising for their exams or from college or university tutorials.
These are typically more general full physicals, which, as many people note, are more thorough than you get in real life!
The examination tend to cover a check on all parts of the body such as head, hearing, hands, shoulders, chest, back, legs, feet as well as eye function.
And also cover node checking, gag reflex (I always skip through that one!) knee jerk reflex, walking and balancing.
One of the best known examples of an Unintentional ASMR general physical examination is featured below.

Specific Medical Examinations
Many of the medical examinations are much more specific. And this in it’s own cerates opportunities for ASMR triggers.
The nature of these medical videos tend to be very up close and personal. And there is a lot of touching, feeling, manipulation.
Many of the Doctors and Nurses that feature on these videos will be softly spoken, with a calm reassuring presence that aligns really well with classic ASMR traits.
We have picked a few of these specific medical examinations to give you a flavour of what works really well for ASMR purposes.
Spine Examination
Typically the spinal examinations will be a shorter video, usually around 10 to 15 minutes.
The process will start with introductions, checking date of birth and asking about the issue, real or imagined depending on if its a role play or not.
A check is made on the walking action and then we move into the actual spine check.
This involves an overarching check on the body before checking the spine itself. And this means checking each are of the Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar regions of the spine.
There is a visual and then a hands on manipulation and palpation to see how the body and spine responds to this stimulus.
A big ASMR trigger area is the palpation of the spine, so working down both sides of the spine itself. Feeling for any movements or deviation from what would be expected.
The shoulders and trapezius are checked before moving onto looking for evidence of sciatica. This is done by stretching out the legs. And then looking at the reflexes in the arms, legs, ankles and feet.

Cranial Nerve Exam
Perhaps one of the most famous ASMR videos is the one where Dr James Kelly works with his patient, ex ice hockey player, Pat LaFontaine with a cranial nerve exam.
So in this video he is conducting a cranial nerve exam which many other ASMR artists have also created their own version.
A typical Cranial Nerve examination process is where the patient is assessed through a series of tests, mainly physical, to ensure the Cranial nerves are working correctly.
So these would be small manipulations, seeing how the reflexes work or how the body reacts when stimulated.
The Cranial Nerves (12 of them) send electrical signals between your brain, face, neck and torso and are there to help you taste, smell, hear and feel sensations. They also help you control your facial expressions, eyes and tongue.
By the way, this is the video that mentions ‘Sandwich Breath’ at 7:54 when The doctor is examining his eyes. If you watch enough ASMR videos you will understand!

Medical Role Play
Role play in medical situations is increasingly popular. These pretty much follow real the process in medical examinations.
So a typical Head to Toe Assessment would follow the process of getting the medical history. And then checking vital signs such as blood pressure and heart rate, checking the head and scalp and then moving to the ears, sinuses and lymphatic system.
The eyes would be assessed, and then nose and mouth followed by range of motion of limbs, reflex actions of arms and legs and then checking out the skin. Heart and lungs would follow.
And then the abdominal examination, often with percussion and palpation of the abdomen to check for abnormalities.
The feet are then examined along with reflexes before moving into a final check of the spine for scoliosis, that is not curved in any way.
However, there are many variations on this process, with some differing in what is included or the order in which they are examined.
So for example, the HEENT exam, (Head, Ears Eyes and Throat) is a shorter version of the full body Head to Toe Examination. So, you will often see the HEENT exam performed by Student Nurses.
